Just tell them that you are happy to use them for a free vacation so long as you don’t have to drive with them. I’m sure they’ll understand.
NP. Really do get over yourself. This comes up all the time, and sorry, but Just No, Boomer. Most DCUM posters have their own money, and in many cases, a lot more money than their parents and ILs. Personally, DH and I pay our share of extended family vacations, but even if someone else is paying, a "free vacation" isn't the prize you think it is. Go into the Search function, type in "beach drama," and you'll see what I mean. Like, some rental in Sandbridge just ain't high luxury, OK? No one wants a long car ride with people who aren't in their immediate family. Get over it.
These aren't rich people problems. The wealthy don't bum rides in cramped automobiles or drive 8 hours when they can fly in 2 and rent a car. People who consider these ideas and then actually do them don't have a lot of choices or financial freedom to make better choices.
They aren’t “bumming rides,” honey. Please stop embarrassing yourself.
What are they doing then?
One would assume they are riding along with their loving family. But in this case, it's only the DH and DC who fit into that category.
NP. DH, my kids and I dearly love all four grandparents. However, we do not love cramming and being uncomfortable for no reason. We also enjoy lots of peace and quiet in the car, and both my mom and my FIL are the talk-your-ear-off, narrate-the-trip types. No thank you. We would not engage in this scenario BECAUSE we love them and BECAUSE we want to fully enjoy the vacation time with them. We recognize and respect our personal preferences and boundaries enough to know that an 8-hour, crammed car trip would not set our vacation off on the right foot. And we would definitely want our own car on the trip for flexibility and ease of everyone doing what they want and need to do on the trip itself.
