I’m very small chested and I think it’s wildly uncomfortable to go bra less/. The chafing irritates me and even though they are small they ache at the end of the day. One of the camisoles with built in support is okay but otherwise I need as bra! I hate all these shirts and dresses made to wear without bras. I think the clothing companies are just trying save money by skimping on fabric and tailoring.
I think you are getting at one of the points, though. There seem to be more outfits that are designed to be braless. I was out on the West Coast this week and the most popular look was this form-fitting tank top that clearly was designed to be worn braless. The cut of the shirt is such that the sides and back are largely exposed and you get close, but not to, "sideboob". A bra under that would completely stick out. Apologies for the description, I'm a guy who doesn't follow the terminology. And yes, as a guy I always notice.
