I can see the appeal for some but we don't want to visit the same place every summer. We do annual trips with my parents, siblings and our families but we pick a different vrbo house or resort so that we can visit different places. It also lets us siblings who are spread across the country each get a turn at a shorter flight.
We visit monthly or whenever we feel like it, plus take vacations further away.
+1. For many it’s a weekend home or getaway. It’s not a vacation home.
This is the case for us. We purchased a weekend home close to DC for all the reasons OP wishes to have one. And we love it and are there about 2x/a month. And we still take as many vacations as we did prior to having the home. We don't do many short weekend trips because they always end up leaving us worn out when we come back and have to return to work and school, but we take at least 2 longer vacations/year to different locations. We haven't traveled internationally again since COVID but that isn't because we feel tied down by our weekend home. OP, you can achieve your stated goals with a weekend home. Do make sure that it is within 2 hours of your home base though.
