We can't know the nature of the relationship between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemming.

She chose to forego her freedom in Paris and return to the US a slave of Thomas Jefferson. And, it would have been illegal for them to be in a romantic relationship or marriage.  The historically, intellectually, and emotionally accurate interpretation is that he had a family with one of his slaves and that there is not enough information to determine the extent to which she consented. All of her children were free, and the only record we have of her choosing between freedom and TJ, she chose TJ.  People are more than their color and circumstances, and are capable of loving each other, so we can't just declare it rape when we don't know.
