Alexandria parent here. In our district, kids can get recommended for testing (by teacher or parent referral) starting in K. Everyone takes a screening test in 2nd grade. There are multiple measure, not just the test, so a low test score does not necessarily eliminate you if the other factors all come out high. In K-3, a student identified as "TAG" (talented and gifted) gets differentiation in her regular classroom. (Meaning the student gets work designed to challenge them in addition to or instead of the regular schoolwork). In 4th and 5th grade, if you are TAG identified, you go to a separate classroom for TAG. There's TAG Language Arts and TAG Math. The child attend either or both every day instead of going to Language Arts or Math in the regular classrooms. It's basically TAG or not TAG, not what sounds like different levels of AAP system in place at FCPS. If your kids is bright but not TAG, their classroom teacher puts them in the highest level reading/math groups within their classroom. Alexandria has Middle School, 6-8 grade. If you did TAG Math in 4th and 5th grade, you will be on track to take Algebra I in 7th grade. In Middle School, TAG services are supposed to be delivered primarily by going to Honors classes. In high school, with Honors and/or AP classes. These are open enrollment, which has frustrated some folks who think that leads to classes being watered down, but they promise the process of pulling out kids who are struggling will be faster this coming year. Much smaller school system than FCPS, so it's a bit apples and oranges when comparing the two systems, but there's the basic gist of it. (Other TAG Alexandria folks correct me if I've goofed.) Signed, Satisfied TAG parent from Alexandria
