It's shit like this EVERY DAY that beats down those of us who live here until we just can't manage anymore. I have become a worse person during the 18 years i have lived in DC. I used to pick up litter. I used to talk to people and engage and check in with folks. I could be a bystander that intervened. At this point in my life (middle age) I am freaking OVER IT. If i see homeless people i ignore them and move on. If I see a group of teenagers I GTFO of the way. I lock my car doors incessantly. I worry every day my kids are going to be the witness of victims of a senseless act of violence perpetrated by someone "who just needs restorative justice". I would LOVE to vote for someone, anyone for public office that actually had the capacity and political motivation to DO something besides stand in front of a microphone and say the same thing over and over.
I've lived here for over twenty years and while gun violence is definitely up, in general the city is much better place to live than it used to be. I am not afraid, not looking over my shoulder at all times - both myself and my teens are street smart and spend plenty of time out and about and I don't buy this vision of our city as a mad max style hellscape. This incident at the library was awful for those involved, but what exactly do you want your city to DO about it other than provide space and services to those who are most vulnerable among us? For reference, I do not live in upper northwestia ward three, but in Shaw. I am more afraid of being hit by a car blowing through a red light, something that happens at nearly every traffic light I pass than I am worried about violent crime.
Oh, is this happening? why don't we change that to "mandate". Then we might be closer to the better place to live that you describe
I’ve been here almost 15 years and never experienced crime or felt especially unsafe. I did get my purse stolen once, but it was my own fault for leaving it unattended. I don’t understand people who make it sound like DC is a warzone— where are they spending time?
You haven’t experienced crime except for the time you did experience crime except that it was your fault? A better world is possible.
