I think it’s because the DC world isn’t threatened by Bama and can reassure themselves that’s it “only the cheap tuition” and “it’s easy to get into.” They then don’t have to discuss that the Bama merit aid program is actually an outlier (even in the South) and have to think about what might be attracting students to all those other schools.
