Maher is still liberal. He’s just frustrated by how far left we’ve gone on certain issues. He’s not wrong, and we should listen instead of doubling down to defend problematic stances that republicans will use against us. Signed, Lifelong Dem
   Like what, my dear? Which stances of Democrats who matter are too far left? Who is advocating for violent criminals to be out on the street? Which elected Democrats say crime is no big deal? Because from where I sit, I see the police - generally a pretty conservative group - having gotten shirty that many people were calling for accountability in the wake of George Floyd’s murder and those same police just decided they didn’t need to do their jobs. Then I watched the videos of police officers fail to do any policing when children were being mowed down while simultaneously preventing parents from rushing in to save their children. Then I think of the thousands of anecdotes I’ve read about the police just not doing their jobs - telling rape victims (in modern times!) they’re mistaken and that they’re not going to investigate, flat out ignoring calls of break ins and violent assaults on the street and you want to sit here and blame the Democrats because you can’t figure out that nobodies on Twitter mean nothing? Or you want to go real broad strokes and whine about the border, the border that is absolutely not open or the broader issue of Republicans loving the red meat issue and the profits undocumented employers bring their donors? I brought up the GOP and they’re harboring hundreds of criminals among the elected in their party upthread and I stand by that. That’s one entire party that openly supports crime and you want everyone to focus on the Democrats? JFC. Save us from the “lifelong Dems” and “classic liberals” like Maher, aka conservatives.
Let's see.... "Defund the police." Sure, you can claim that Democrats don't want this, but it is DEMOCRATS - in Congress- who continue to beat this drum. Abortion up until birth - It used to be Safe, legal, and rare - but it now has become something to celebrate. So, until elected Democrats can speak out on the limits of abortion, this is an extreme position. Border policy - you can yap all you want about the border not being open - but the migrants who are coming, entering illegally, and being allowed to stay will tell you otherwise. Our border has NEVER - EVER - been this bad. And, our northern border is now seeing record number of encounters thanks to Joe's inaction. These are just a few examples of how extreme the left has become... in addition to those discussed by Maher. And, one last point - I will argue that it is the rhetoric and the policies of the left that have caused issues in law enforcement. Good people no longer want to do the job. They see how this profession is demonized and treated. Why work in a field where you are exposed to such crap?? So, many police forces are now facing a dwindling force and lowering their standards for new recruits. The vast majority of the men and women who work in law enforcement are honorable and hard working people. Don't paint the entire profession with a broad brush. There are bad apples in EVERY profession.
Democrats have controlled at least one house for a while now, can you point to these defund the police bills that they've passed?
Democrats in the House haven't been successful in passing any bills. But, there are members who would like to.... particularly members of the squad. I could post video after video of them calling for defunding the police, but I will save you from that nauseating sight. Many localities, have, however been successful in defunding the police. And, ironically (or not so ironically) these are some of the same localities that are struggling to maintain law and order. And, they are all run by Democrats. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/mar/07/us-cities-defund-police-transferring-money-community
So we're holding whole parties responsible for the policies of any given member? Are you saying republicans as a whole plan to discontinue social security and medicare?
I refer you back to the title of this thread. Maher is right. Democrats need to admit that yes, there are some people who need to go to jail. Some for a very long time. Until they agree that criminals deserve punishment and not merely "restorative justice," they will be continued to be viewed as soft on crime. Democrat leaders in some of the big cities have implemented policies that have made those cities unlivable. And, prominent Democrats need to start admitting that and speaking out against it.
What mainstream democrats don't admit that some people need to go to jail? If fringe elected officials are now representative of parties, why don't republicans condemn all of the Constitutional Sheriffs?
