Wait, I thought there was supposed to be a mandatory finance class as part of the math curriculum. Learning credit, taxes, banking, stocks, college loans, 401K etc.... What happened?
It's not mandatory. That was proposed by the recent SMOB, but it was not approved by the board.
It is available in our HS as Quantitative Literacy. Popular math class for Srs
MCCPTA note out indicating that though it meets the MD state req of taking a math class in each year of high school, it may not be accepted by the university system of MD to meet their own admissions requirements. I'd suggest anyone looking to go to one of the UMD schools check first. That said, it's a shame that financial literacy isn't a graduation requirement, with such a class being among the options for fulfilling it (as long as there were test-out or extracurricular activity options or something similar to keep the slot open for the more academically inclined). O'Looney often was the best board member last year. It's too bad that they short-changed the discussion so that it never got to the point where the alternatives would have removed the main objection. Mastery of the subject is sorely needed, and would support true equity.
