It's everyone's business that a 3rd grader made a gun threat and that the school didn't call the police right away.  Do you really think only the one targeted kid was at risk?  Third graders aren't exactly great shots and to my understanding they didn't search school grounds and didn't immediately know who made the threat to detain them. This, 100%.  Unless there’s a psychiatric evaluation of the threat maker saying otherwise, you cannot assume anything anymore.

There have been numerous elementary aged children shot - almost all by accident - inside their schools with guns someone brought in during the last 10+ years.

The case in Newport News stands out with the age and that everyone (teachers, parents, lawyers) seems in agreement that it was fully intentional.

Please, APS, don’t just assume “it can’t happen here”.  Take all threats very seriously first.  Then sort it can be sorted out with the help of professionals.  Don’t sweep under the rug. [/quote]

But if the threat-maker is removed from campus, then no one is at risk. Not the child who was threatened and not the rest of the class or the teachers or anyone else. I don’t know whether the threat-maker was removed, but that seems like the appropriate action, not a lockdown. Locking down a school WITH THE CHILD WHO MADE THE THREAT INSIDE THE SCHOOL does nothing to protect whomever is in a class with that child when the lockdown goes into effect. I don’t think the parents who are saying there should have been a lockdown are thinking about this rationally.[/quote]

I’m the PP you’re quoting and I absolutely agree with you.  I didn’t mention a lockdown.  I think the parents calling for a lockdown are envisioning a situation where it is unclear who made a threat etc.[/quote]

That’s true. You didn’t say lockdown. The moms on Mona were all about a lockdown, and the Arlnow article talks about it, but you did not.[/quote]
