This country has a disgusting gun problem that needs to be solved. I wish I knew how, but we have to do something! This man should have never had access to any sort of weapon.
ANY sort of weapon. You mean like his hands, head, feet, teeth, stray sticks, bricks, pieces of pipe, broken glass, steak knives, pocket knives, kitchen knives, screwdrivers, pipe wrenches, flammables, chains, and pretty much any other object of daily use? All of which can be used as weapons, frequently to deadly effect. Be logical. What was going on here? A floridly insane individual somehow or another got ahold of a gun. Given his mental condition and likely prior record it was probably unlawful for him to possess in the first place. It was unlawful for him to carry it without a permit. It was unlawful for him to have it on Metro but was unlawful for him to use it as he did. Now, suppose for a moment that there was a way to remove floridly insane people from circulation until they are no longer floridly insane. No better way to prevent floridly insane people from accessing weapons of any kind.
I can’t believe people write things like this. Just… please read your disgusting drivel to yourself before you hit submit. You want HUMAN BEINGS “out of circulation” because your precious guns need to be everywhere all the time. What made you like this? This man killed someone within seconds and injured others- he couldn’t have done that with “broken glass.” Let’s get the GUNS out of circulation, AND let’s help mentally ill people.
By all means yes, let’s help the floridly mentally I’ll who are a danger to themselves and other HUMAN BEINGS. By getting them into decent institutions where they can be monitored, protected, properly and effectively cared for and taught the necessary skills for later self care and self management. As bad as things were before deinstitutionalization, they have been far worse since. People with mental illness are tossed on the street with a bottle of pills and maybe a handout listing community clinics where they might seek a refill. There is no meaningful social, medical or psychiatric follow through. It is tragic, cruel and a disgrace. As for all the evil, terrible, malicious, sentient and self locomoting GUNS “in circulation,” are you going to take them from the police, special agents, private detectives, security guards and other law enforcement personnel? Because it’s as least as likely that this guy stole his gun from one of them (or from a criminal already prohibited from possessing it in the first place) as that he bought it somewhere. Guns are expensive and even more expensive in the underworld. Floridly mentally ill people who have been suffering for any length of time rarely have any valuables because they’ve sold, lost or had them stolen and have no way to afford replacements. And if DC didn’t prohibit the carry of Metro of licensed firearms carried by background checked, trained permit holders with a crime rate lower than law enforcement, maybe this guy would’ve been taken down before he did as much time as he did.
