30 plus year Phish fan here. All I can say is, you either get it or you don't. If it's not your thing, great. But it is for many. So much so that they were about to sell out MSG for 13 nights in a row. No other band has ever done that. So its about much more than just drugs. I have tons of friends from the scene, and none of us do drugs at shows.
It's about more than drugs. But let's be honest - that has a lot to do with it. They're incredible musicians, and decent songwriters. They don't sing well live (and the studio vocals are unremarkable). Trey loves himself and his solos are 10-20x longer than they should be. It's too bad that so many ignorant people are chiming in on this thread. It really is interesting how such wimpy music led by a really unappealing guy (and let's not get started on Mike Gordon) has been so successful for decades. Worthy of discussion.
I think that says more about their fans than the band itself. I wonder how many times after a show they’ve said to themselves “I can’t believe they cheered for that crap! I was so f#cked i could barely play.” I’ve listened to Phish and it’s atonal music.
