OP, smart to be doing this. FWIW, DD's school college counselor told her to have her list run from reaches to 30% acceptance rate. While DD got into her ED where her GPA/scores put her in the upper quadrant, IDK what would have happened if that had not worked out. I thought her list should have been more broad with schools in the 50-75% acceptance rate for likelies while DD, DH, and college counselor were on the same page. Again, it all worked out, but I know a number of kids where this did not happen.
Agree, lucky it worked out, nothing higher than 30 percent acceptance rate is crazy risky.
Right?? DH attended an elite college in another era. He just didn't understand how much college admissions has changed even though one of his close friend's DC had a brutal experience as the parents assumed that since they were top NESCAC/Ivy grads, then all would be okay for the kid. It wasn't. I'm still kinda shocked that DD's college counselor advised this and that DD was going for it, even though she knew a girl a grade ahead with a very comparable academic/EC profile to her and was dinged everywhere but a 50% accept rate university! DD would invoke her as a cautionary tale, then turn around and agree to everything her college counselor was saying about her list! I still think "Phew!"
