[/quote] I never felt unsafe walking around the Upper West Side and Morningside Heights as a grad student at Columbia because there were always so many people around. The only rules of thumb were making sure you're on the #1 train north of 96th Street and stay out of Morningside Park unless you're part of a group with at least a dozen people. I get the impression New Haven is dodgier, perhaps because there aren't as many people around at night in some areas. [/quote] If you can handle Morningside heights, you can handle new Haven.
