Yes, OP, your feelings are completely valid.

Most parents, if they are financially able, would like to help their kids, to give them a head start on a down payment, maybe paying tuition for grandchildren, etc.  Of course, not all parents are financially able to do this.  But I think that all good parents would at least consider it a nice thing to do, with the understanding that their kids will help the next generation, and so on.

I am 50, and my parents have been generous over the years - providing a down payment and tuition for the grandchildren.  We are very blessed that we never asked for it - they just provided it. And I plan to do this for my kids.

If your dad refused to give you $3000 after the apartment fire, he sounds like a vindictive and selfish person.  Maybe it's best to just try to make peace with it.  Then if you can, try to give your own kids a head start with a down payment, etc, and urge them to pass it on.[/quote]
