My kids are six years apart. So doing search all over again (first child in a single sex school and second is different gender). Even just in 6 years, it seems like the reputation, vibe, and even physical plant has changed at most schools. But others seem forever stuck (looking at you, Maret). I don't want to slant the discussion with my own views, although Maret does seem like a time capsule from the 90s, with indoor athletic facilities from the 40s. So what schools rising and which ones losing their luster?
I agree. It seems like as Maret has shot up in the academic rankings to equal the likes of GDS, Sidwell, etc. it has paid less attention to its athletic facilities. I think they're building a new off-campus outdoor facility though.
Not much Maret can do with the physical existing space given the neighborhood restrictions. My kid is looking at playing bball and baseball there so while I do wish they had a gym that looked like Sidwell, I am intrigued with the new outdoor facilities.
I can see Maret’s next project will be renovation of the school and grounds. With the new athletes center the school can use the existing field at Maret as staging for construction. Look for this to be a big push by the new HOS. They will redo the building and grounds. There is more than enough money at the school.
I have nothing against Maret. We considered it quite seriously for our child, and we liked it a lot when we visited. But I do think that this is not the right forum for professionals to be marketing your school. It feels borderline unethical, because you intentionally create the misleading impression that you are a parent at the school. You are trying to trick people. That feels icky and desperate. If you want the reputation of Maret to change (i.e. you want people to think it's a top-academic school, or you want people to think the athletic facilities are good, or you want people to think it's comparable to the more sought-after schools in the area) this is not the way to do that. The way to do that is to focus on improving the actual substance of the school. It would be great if Maret makes a big move to change and update its campus, but the place to talk about that is on your website, or with a press release, not in a whisper campaign on an anonymous message board. But again, I actually really liked Maret a lot. So this isn't a slam on the school. Just the marketing techniques used here.
