I think the Dems actively lost that one - and Fetterman is the playbook. -Play for 5 points in every single county. The dems just fully conceded rural areas and paid the price. -Mcauliffe was a terrible, boring, sterile, establishment, do-over candidate - nothing there to get excited about or turn anyone on. -This all let Youngkin get away with being two different things in two different parts of the state - vest wearing soccer dad up here, Trumpy christian nationalist in rural VA. -Astroturf organizing on school issues, etc. - Dems are WAY behind (and the years of school closures played into it... they are trying to recreate that vibe on the woke issues)
This is why Youngkin will be more successful if he runs for President than Hogan. He has already won the support of the evangelical right with all the school stuff, which means that he doesn’t need to be a consistent fire breather on campaign trail. You will once again see both right-wing Glenn and moderate, suburban Glenn. He can also claim to govern a “Purple state” so he knows how to do bipartisanship, which the media loves. This guy is going far.
