So - I proposed this before and no one was really interested, but here I'll try again: Watching Palin and Begich cannibalize each other's votes, leaving open the path for a third candidate to take the win, do we see any possible parallel here if Trump and DeSantis are both in the R primary in 2024? Doesn't it seem possible that they each cull from the same group of voters - and there's room for some third candidate to end up with more than either of them individually?

I don't know who that third candidate is, and I know primaries are different from generals, and I know ranked choice is different from winner takes all. But it still seems like there could be something similar here. Am I wrong? My spouse thinks so - he thinks if Trump is in the race, it's definitely Trump, and no one else will get enough votes to affect that. [/quote]

Trump is too popular among GOP voters. Still has approval ratings in the 90% range. He will suck up all the oxygen.

The issue with Palin and Begich is that neither has approval ratings as high as 90% among AK GOP voters. Two mediocre candidates that inspire little passion - not a winning combo. My prediction is that in the future the AK GOP will host a closed nominating convention and party elites will handpick a candidate, promising that candidate all the party money through the 2 rounds of voting.
