I'm closer to all of my aunts, uncles, & cousins on my dad's side because he's closer in age to all of his siblings. My mom, on the other hand, is 25 years younger than her oldest sibling and the sibling next closest in age to her was 14 when she was born.

I only knew of my cousins on my mom's side of the family, I didn't really grow up with them. My mom is the only sibling of hers who went to college and moved away from her home state (GA). I'm 40 and the cousin on my mom's side of the family who is closest to my age is 58.

Anyway, I went to Vanderbilt for college and met a guy there in a class. We hit it off and he eventually asked me out. We were discussing where we were from and our families, all the usual first date stuff, and I mentioned my mom's name. He said "Oh, that's too funny because my mom has an aunt named that! How crazy since it's such a unique name." And I agreed because I'd never met another person with my mom's name.

He mentioned that he was going on a trip over fall break to visit his grandpa who'd just gotten released from the hospital after a bad fall from a ladder and I was like "What? That's crazy! My uncle just fell off a ladder and was released from the hospital two days ago. My mom is flying into Nashville before break starts and she and I are driving into Marietta, GA to see him." He kind of made a face and said "My grandpa is moving into a rehab facility in Marietta today."

We both got really quiet after that and I think he was the first one that said something like "uh, what was your mom's maiden name because I'm 99% sure we're related." and I started laughing and said "____ and there's NO way we're not 100% related in some way."

Sure enough, his grandpa was my uncle. His mom was a cousin I'd only met once when I was like 7.

I made a vow after that date to really try to figure out my family tree on my mom's side of the family and avoid dating anyone from GA or TN until I did. [/quote]
