I went to Claire's: one ear lobe piercing is not straight, and it's a struggle to put earrings in that lobe. Anecdotal, but I've wondered whether going elsewhere might have resulted in a better piercing job.
The piercing guns used my Claire’s and similar use a relatively dull metal post to crush your ear tissue until the post comes through the other side. Huge difference from going to a piercing studio that uses hollow needles which remove the tissue, leaving a hole for the jewelry. Those are straight, do not have scar tissue from a crush injury, and they use quality jewelry.
Exactly this - it's not just about the hygiene, it's about doing it properly and not having any potential for scarring or an uneven hole. I would rather a piercer use a hollow core needle than someone just push essentially a sharp post through my child's skin. *I had my ears pierced as an infant at Claire's and my second hole as a teen at a tattoo parlor.
