I think OP is not changing the story. She’s just not telling it clearly. I’ve reread it a couple of times and think this is what happened. I think what’s confusing is that we as readers dont have a sense of time between events.

Let’s say in October 2021, OP’s son bought a switch and 4 games for little brother. Son paid $150.  Mom said that younger brother was too young for such a gift and said, “Hey, that was a nice gift, but he’s too young. I’ll reimburse you for the $150 and hold the switch and games until younger brother is old enough.” She paid him $150.

Fast forward to July 2022: Son is trying to sell things to make money. Mom goes into closet and sees that the switch and games she reimbursed him for are gone. Son had gone in there and sold them for $40.

OP here- exactly! This is what happened. So we sat son down and told him how disappointed we are.  How once I bought the game from him two years ago, it obviously became mine.  So then to take it, is stealing. Obvidouky he knew that or he wouldn’t have needed to go into my closet and take without asking. 
   So he stole it. It was no longer his once I bought back in 2020ish.
   Second he violated my trust going into my closet to get anything that wasn’t his.  That alone was sneaky.
   [b]So now I’m selling the switch myself- [/b]and he starting yesterday, has to “earn the money” to pay me back.  Just pulling it from his savings account didn’t really feel like a punishment. So he has to earn the 80 bucks- through working more hours or mowing for neighbors. Then he has to take the paycheck or money, cash the check- and pay me 80 bucks. Quite honestly, while reading some of the other suggestions, I think he should have to buy back all the games- which would cost more than 80- but I didn’t read that or think of that before I sat down with him.
  In meantime, he can’t use Xbox until I am paid in full. He has to “work for” the money he stole. What he should have for in the first place.
