I think all our biggest issues are related: 1. Homelessness 2. Crime 3. Lack of opportunity/criminality for kids living in poverty or other high risk situations Schools could of course be better but I actually think for the people responding on DCUM it can’t possibly be the biggest issue because most of us either have decent IB schools or the ability to use the lottery to access them. Schools are primarily a problem for #3 above and it’s obvious to me that the issue isn’t simply “better schools” because we already pour a lot of money into schools serving this population and it’s not working.
Eh, on the schools thing: speak for yourself. I'm guessing you have the money or the luck to be feeding into Wilson. Or maybe don't have kids in the public schools. Or maybe don't have kids at all. For many many people, largely the middle class set, we leave DC because of the schools, some time around middle elementary. The prospects of middle school and beyond are not good. I lottery-ed into a decent charter, but it's still not a great experience. I'm intending, like everyone else I know WOTP who hasn't lottery-ed into some very specific MS and HS's, to go to the burbs. This isn't a new thing. This is because DC schools by and large are terrible (charters included).
