My daughter attends BASIS and once, when she was age 11, she tried to enter the National Gallery after school (on an early dismissal day). Not only did the guards not allow her, they made her feel like a neglected child for being downtown without a parent.
We had a similar experience recently. My 9yo (who granted looks young for her age as she's small in stature) and I were going to a show at the Kennedy Center. She had soccer that morning and someone brought gatorade and she drank the whole bottle apparently. We stopped by our house for her to change and dress up and then went to the KC but parking was atrocious and she was by then completely desperate to get to a bathroom. I NEVER pay to park at the KC b/c it is insane and I can always fine neighborhood parking but she was panicking so I pulled up front and told her to go in and to straight to the bathroom and I would park underneath in the garage and come meet her. When I parked and got inside she was nowhere to be found (this had taken maybe 3-4 minutes). Turns out the security guards were clearly deeply concerned about her coming in alone and escorted her to the bathroom and then had her sit with them and asked her a ton of questions. It was embarrassing. For me anyway, she didn't care.
