Curious, did your son visit during the Rice Owl Day last week? Mine did and was turned off by how quiet the campus was. Not a lot of happy looking students. Wondering if you visited at a different time (when maybe things were more lively on campus)? My son's visit was underwhelming and took Rice from #1 to probably a no. I am considering a follow up visit in case the day we visited was an anomaly. So much to love about Rice, I don't want him to say no based on one bad visit.  Please let me know your thoughts. Visits can be so tricky right? My son has visited Rice a few times because we can drive to Houston. This past week was kind of a limbo week: Because of rising cases, in order to keep students safe for finals, Rice cancelled all upcoming public parties, brought back indoor mask mandates, and reduced dining hall capacity to half. It did seem more quiet than usual. In some of our past visits, the campus is usually vibrant and filled with kids passing by. There would be kids biking in groups in the bike loop at 10pm at night, walking back in groups from Rice Village, generally it seemed that a active campus. For us, it is really important how the campus is at night (and it feels safe and comfortable). Compared to Cornell, the campus feels intimate and more cohesive. But again, I have realized vibes are so personal. I hope you get to visit again so that there is no what if? What other options does your son have?[/quote]
