consistant polling reveal americans identify themselves as 45% conservative 20% liberal and the rest moderate.
No, what polls show is that about 40% self-identify as "conservative", about 35% self-identify as "liberal", and about 20% self-identify as "moderate". Of course, such a poll does nothing to map policy preference to self-identification. What the poll most likely shows is that right-wingers are more likely to be "joiners" and have a strong identity with some identifiable group. I'm probably more liberal/progressive than 90% of the US population and I self-identify as moderate/independent. That's because most of my views are mainstream US views: support medicare/medicaid, social security, social safety net programs like food stamps and AFDC, etc, etc.. It's the radical reactionaries who self-identify with a "movement" that seeks to "return America to it's roots" or some such nonsense, by repealing Roosevelt-era reforms, or eliminating progressive taxation, or going back to the gold standard. All these things are so out of the mainstream that, of course, those who support them need a special "out of the mainstream" banner to gather beneath. That banner is "conservativism". http://www.gallup.com/poll/148745/Political-Ideology-Stable-Conservatives-Leading.aspx The rest of us are "moderates" In other words, things have been working just fine for the last many decades--getting rid of slavery, then Jim Crow, then winning marriage rights for same sex couples, etc... We're moderate because we want to stay the course. How do we know that few of those "moderates" are closet "conservatives"? Because every time conservative politicians try to do something like gut social security, or eviscerate the social safety net, or privatize medicare, they get their asses handed to them by a massive majority coalition of liberals and moderates.
