It means instilling good values, spending quality time with your kids snd teens, making sure they are not involved with negative Influences online or in person, ensuring that they feel connected to a responsible adult in their life which leads to them making good decisions that do not include weapons or violence.
PP, I don't know how old your children are, but evidently they are not old enough yet for you to realize that the parent-child relationship does not work on an input-output model.
?!! They do! They really do.
No, they really don't. Good parents can have children who nonetheless do not turn out well. Bad parents can have children who nonetheless do turn out well. And even the most well-brought-up teenager doesn't always have the judgment to avoid disastrous choices. I remember my sister-in-law telling me about the wonderful mother she believed herself to be, with her first child, who did everything he was supposed to - until she had her second child.
Well I agree that good kids can make bad choices I do not agree with the implication that it’s a “throw your hands up kind of situation because kids do stupid things anyways, so why think that involved parents will make a difference”, which is what a lot of people are doing these days. Things are worse for kids and some parents need to step up in a big way. We aren’t talking about your SILs one baby being potty trained immediately and sleeping through the night from day one and then her baby number two never sleeping and wearing a diaper until age 4 kind of situation. Also we know nothing if the amount and kind of attention she gave her children. We are talking about BCC teenagers vandalizing property and starting fights. I doubt that most of the kids involved have really close relationships with their family members who are likely unaware of what they are doing, who they are hanging out with and what they look at on their phones all day and night. These are the sorts of kids who are being overly influenced by crap online and/or a crappy peer group, not influenced by parental connections, or a strong and positive sense of self.
