The residence hall at William and Mary uses the proper pronunciation. [/quote] Incorrect. Fauquier was English, not French. He was a colonial governor, which is why that dorm is named after him. I am old. I lived in the Botetourt Complex in the early 80s. People asked about the different pronunciation. And the story told to us was that they had been pronouncing it “Faw-keer” until some young male college students started answering the phones “F**k here.” So the school decided to change the pronunciation of the dorm name to avoid that.[/quote]
