Penalty would be valid because Davidson strikes face of attacker. Give Davidson more starts and experience (which she should have had already) and she makes the same play but outside the box. US 5 games 3 games failed to score. 2 W 1T. 2L Managed 1 regular time win against NZ in 5 games Lloyd Morgan Rapinoe Heath Lavalle Press etc. failed to score in 3 of 5 games 5 games in 13 days. This team was poorly designed rostered and tactics. This was failure on a physical mental and tactical level. Honestly this team has been good enough to get by on 1 of those but not anymore. Interesting to see if Vlatko becomes a sacrificial goat to protect all the GOATs.
Our best left back, Jaelene Daniels, was not even called up, because a couple years ago she refused to wear rainbow jersey for religious reasons. If they called her up, they could have played Dunn in her natural position as a winger. Too many players on this team are on the wrong side of 30 and got their call up based their past reputation. They need to rebuild the squad, clear out the dead weight, and add young hungry players (e.g., Macario).
Jaelene Daniels retired from soccer last year.
Part of the reason she retired is that she was the best left back in the country and couldn't get on the national team due to politics. Her coach and gay players at North Carolina vouched for her but the team would never accept her. This is where the team lost their way because they were operating in dual tracks of an athletic team and social justice movement. That's fine, but it creates an inherent conflict where player selection and lineups are decided by non-soccer factors. The old guard wasn't going to step aside and it was suicide for new coach to come in and adequately promote young players in six months. Then COVID happened so even though he got an extra year, he opted to stick with most of the WC 19 team that won but was flawed. The decision to have Dunn as a left back worked in France because they got enough offense through penalties and set pieces, but the open play was lacking. She is one of the team's best attacking options but is left in the back because they don't have a suitable replacement. Daniels could have been that. Another option was never found. It wasn't a surprise the midfield at the Olympics was thrashed by better teams and the front lacked any consistency. Rapinoe and Morgan are dreadfully off pace, but can you imagine if the team's social justice figurehead and recovering mom were not on team? Heath was another curious choice because she had missed most of the season. Yes, Macario looks like a player of the future, but her playing limited minutes in Tokyo makes me think she isn't quite ready. Lavalle did not have a great tournament and will be 28 by the next World Cup. She's the youngest of the midfielders. None of the forwards will be younger than 30. This next generation has a lot of questions and we haven't seen them in meaningful minutes. Big challenge for Vlatko to get this sorted out in next two years.
