Agree that low pay, low respect and high risk are the problem here. Flexible schedules and so forth don’t really work with law enforcement but that’s not the recruitment issue. Anyone that thinks this is a Detroit problem is delusional. The LEO agencies around here are desperate to recruit and can’t fill their academy classes. I think communities of color need to do a real recruitment effort to get the right kind of candidates into the academies. It would take a real mind shift and an effort by ministers, civil rights leaders, and other community leaders.
It’s the drug test stupid. Until LEOs relax requirements, it will be hard to get people. The Teamsters are pushing to allow truckers to drive if they use marijuana. Other trades are also eliminating drug tests.
It’s immature to call someone stupid. But putting that aside, you’re right that the drug screening questions are problematic, as are some of the other screening questions mentioned above. But, in addition, raises have not kept place with inflation, most jurisdictions have started cutting back on the pensions, and the risk really has increased as more criminals own more guns that have higher fire power. It’s not like the 80s and 90s. The Supreme Court has limited what we can do with gun control, but we can raise pay, loosen up some of the requirements relating to past recreational drug/alcohol use, and get communities of color involved in trying to recruit law enforcement officers. I agree with many of the reform initiatives but I think they need to be combined with these efforts as well or the only people joining the force will be the ones jonesing for a gun and a badge.
