It’s not in the genes. Both of my parents went to Ivy League skills. I went to one year of junior college and did horrible in school. I have ADHD, but when I was a kid, nobody knew what that was. I had a million friends growing up, played sports, have my my own business, but book smart I was not.
Genes x environment Genes determine your IQ potential. The nature of the environment, including prenatal and postnatal insults that harm the brain (stress, infections), nutrition, parental nurturing, etc, all play a role in ultimate IQ. IQ is a polygenic trait (determined by multiple genes), and high IQ parents aren't guaranteed to have high IQ kids because those kids may have gotten recessive genes, or they may have failed to develop to their full potential due to environmental factors. The reverse is also true: a dumb parent can have smart kids, though it's less likely because dumb parents don't often raise their kids in a brain nurturing way.
