I’m getting massive pushback from dealer trying to get a Highlander XLE. One dealer slightly under MSRP but others not budging. Hoping I can work something out tomorrow. They are all talking about inventory shortages but I also thought Toyota is somewhat insulated from the issue. I may walk but I don’t have a ton of leverage, I need a new car in a few weeks and if they truly do run out I don’t want to buy something I don’t want.
There is plenty of inventory for the Highlander. I would call around to more dealers. Also, don't just ask for a discount, tell them what you want to pay. Dealerships are taking advantage of the common notion that there is an inventory shortage. Unless you tell them what you want to pay, they will think that you have no idea what is possible and will therefore just stick to MSRP or a mild discount. It looks like a 10% discount from MSRP should be possible for the Highlander XLE, so make that your offer and don't budge from it. Tell them you are ready to buy, right now, you are just calling the dealers to see who will sell you one at this price. Here's something to help build your confidence: https://www.toyota.com/deals-incentives/highlander Toyota would not be offering cash incentives if inventory was so tight that everything was going at MSRP. Good luck!
