Getting bumped down to the second team leaves a sour taste in people's mouths and they know that the quality on the second team is way below what they are used to. Makes sense to leave.
Makes sense to leave if you have somewhere better to go.
Always keep your options open even if you are in good standing with your team. You never know what might happen. It is best to have several options because it is not an exact science and coaches value different qualities in players. Sometimes a player is not at the top team level and moving down is a good option, but sometimes the player is at the top team level, but the coach thinks he has better options (e.g., briinging new players from other clubs). In the latter case, a latteral move to another club is probably the best option.
There are a lot of teams/clubs in the area. If your kid is not getting playing time they are on the bubble. If your kid’s skill set or style of play is different vs the other kids it time to look for a better fit. The thing is if a kid does not fit the style of play or coach does not know what to do with them, players do not develop. The coach really only concentrates on his/her top 5-6 players. These players start, coach favors them, their confidence grows, they take risks and develop. The other players on the team are the scout squad(and after thought) for the top players and they know it. Most places keep a coach for two years. That’s a lot of time to sit and hope a new coach will see your potential.
