What's going on with TAG? All I could find was an article about needing to address disproportionate demographics.
It's going away. Then VA is planning to offer only one diploma type to HS graduates. Betting AP is next. We can't have systemic inequities. SJW -- it's gotten out of hand, and will continue to do so.
I believe you, but can you point me to a source on TAG going away?
You can begin here and then look for the related docs. You need to read between the lines a little too — for obvious reasons. https://www.acps.k12.va.us/Page/2488
So I read the link you provided. Either your reading comprehension skills are zero or you’re trying to push some bizarre agenda. Which one is it?
I’ll ignore the insult and suggest that you need to read more carefully, think through the consequences of what’s being considered and try to understand the language used by educational bureaucracy. For example, “During the course of this committee work, ideas arose suggesting that the elementary ELA services should be reviewed and consideration should be given to returning those services to the regular classroom with differentiation provided.“. What do you think happens when you integrate TAG back into a general education classroom with a teacher who has multiple competing objectives?
It fails as the TAG Advisory Group noted back in 2017: The written TAG curriculum materials for use at K-3 levels were also viewed as limited in respect to differentiated strategies and resources being identified for classroom use. They were in evidence in a limited number of primary classrooms and pullout groups. Middle school trade books were found to be below grade level in Lexile level and often inappropriate for use with gifted students. Supplemental math materials, designed for use with gifted learners, were not being employed at any level in the math program, based on classroom observation. Classroom observation data also corroborate these concerns in respect to the limited use of differentiated instruction found in the majority of classrooms. This was especially true in the areas of higher level thinking and conceptual development. While the use of differentiation was limited, when it was employed, it was done so effectively Move the TAG program back into gen ed and then you have a program on paper, but not in practice. The educational bureaucracy knows that there are many ways to kill a program without killing it.
