[b]knowledgeable and conversant across a broad range of subjects[/b] - You can use the Internet to become this.  Easily.  If you have the inclination and aptitude. College doesn't give you the brains to do it.  It just conditions the brains you have.  I can do it on my own for free.

[b]contributing member of society[/b] - A measurable way one contributes to society is by engaging in the production of goods and services, typically in exchange for compensation.  If someone tells you that should NOT be the primary objective of college, you've been conned.
