NP, just curious about why one would you avoid mentioning this. I assume the teen knows the tutor gets paid to work with her.  Why wouldn’t you want a teenager to start understanding the market value of various goods and services?[/quote]

Presumably the tutor is a necessity and if the family can afford it, there’s no need to add to the child’s existing anxiety by discussing the exact cost. If the child is wasting the service, that’s a different conversation, but akin to telling a child to not waste food by leaving the milk out of fridge or turning lights off when they leave a room.

My kids know how much things cost but we keep it neutral. “With demand for tutoring rising, tutors are increasing their rates.” would have sufficed without upsetting PP’s kid who already seems to have anxiety and self-esteem issues.[/quote]

You would actually say to your 17 yr old "with demand for tutors rising..."???  Really?

I doubt it.

You would say:  "your tutor just texted me that she's raising her rates."  Just like I did.  The DCUM crowd sure does like to pretend they are high and mighty.[/quote]
