My beliefs about spankings are irrelevant here because he is clearly not spanking her. Are you saying that your definition of spanking is something that is "supposed to hurt"? Lots of things hurt, including being beaten (or whipped, if you prefer) with a belt. How can you seriously call what he is doing a spanking? Would you "spank" your own child in this manner.[/quote]

Labeling this a beating seriously insults that millions of children abused everyday. Nowhere do I see the teenager being punched, kicked, etc. Nowhere do I see her being burned, scarred, etc. Nowhere do I see her being hit with a board, cord, etc.

Was the Dad verbally abusive? Absolutely and I think his cursing and hateful tone was abhorrent. But did he *beat* her? No.

And yes, I would spank my teenager in this manner (minus the verbal abuse and for only a fraction of the time of this spanking) if a spanking was necessary. Of course, my children were spanked when they were younger, so now that they are older (2 in their teens), I don't have to spank them as a form of discipline. [/quote]

A jury will conclude this was child abuse. Pure and simple. For one thing, it's odd that you draw any sort of distinction between spanking and beating -- spanking IS beating. There are no degrees. But more importantly, the entire context of this -- the rage, the viciousness, the repetitive nature of it. He was out of control. It was a beating. If a teacher did this to your child, you'd want him strung up.[/quote]
