“Legalizing all drugs” — all of them, the fentanyl-laced weed, the synthetic brain-melting tabs from China l — will improve the lives of men with schizophrenia living on the street? Ok
If it would make you feel better about your nonsense fearmongering we could carve out an exemption. Of course it would be wholly unnecessary because 1. They are already getting those drugs while they are illegal so nothing would change except 2. Most illegal dealers would be put out of business because who would buy sketchy laced weed from an illegal dealer when guaranteed clean drugs are available at every corner store and pharmacy plus 3. Even if it did make things worse for a tiny group of people the benefits would far outweigh those negatives. But of course you knew all that and you never actually cared about those people, you just fear change and have an illogical puritan aversion to drugs (well, at least the kind of drugs that aren't already legal that are actually more dangerous than many illegal drugs) so you'll grasp at any straw that maintains your fragile worldview.
seriously, STFU. One of us in this conversation works on a regular basis with this population of men, and one of us does not but has read about this topic in undergrad. One of us has also worked in 2 local ERs, dealing with the mess made when ppl with un(der) treated schizophrenia self medicate with — are you sitting down? — combinations of legal substances. A little legal weed, washed down with some legal booze, followed by a few pills given to you at your last ER visit. "Making all drugs legal" is the kids talking. How is your target population going to afford this new cornucopia of recreational drugs now available at every corner store? When I buy weed at the dispensary, I never leave there spending less than $140. Or did you mean for taxpayers to pick up the tab for the psychedelics and MDMA for our unhomed neighbors? Should we also buy the whiskey chaser?
You're the one who needs to STFU. There are about 6,000 homeless people in DC, of which about 70% are male, of which about 10% experience schizophrenia. That's about 420 homeless men with schizophrenia in DC. You're arguing that we shouldn't implement reforms that would severely reduce crime and improve the quality of life for all 700,000 people in DC, that would end incarceration for drug offenses and increase job prospects for thousands of residents who would otherwise be branded as offenders for life, all because 420 people MIGHT be negatively affected? Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees.
