Rapinoe will be a sub at Olympics Morgan will start Heath will start Sophia Smith will be a sub Naeher will start Lloyd is interesting as she can still score but not much else, I can’t see them takin her but who knows A lot of this is going to be name recognition and sponsor related team politics. After the Olympics they will clean house for the next cycle of WC
That's the problem with this team. They've become a celebrity team and not one about performance. It's a lot of what pushes the pay dispute. Rapinoe basically is taking a year off with the assumption that she is going to have a spot at almost 36. That's insane. Lloyd doesn't have that entitlement but she also hasn't played and she will be almost 39. Give a lot of credit to those that went overseas out of their comfort zone. More should play there regularly. The team selection should be interesting as will the chemistry. They've seemed to relish being larger than a team, but that brings a lot of baggage.
Why do people keep putting Rapinio up as an elite player? In her prime she was a roll player at best and that was 5-6 years ago. In the World Cup her teammates had to work harder because she was on the field. She was a turnover machine, out of position and slow. The one game the coaches thought would be competitive they sat her. She is/was the same way in the NWSL. I think she does a great job marketing herself. Let’s face it in the US, the Women World Cup is an even like the Olympics. The vast majority of people who watch it know nothing about soccer or the players. The coverage/analysis is very lite and alway positive with lots of human interest stories. Rapinoe’s pink hair made her stand out and she cashed in. Great for her but she was never a top payer. The Olympics roster is 18. So two goalies bring it down to 16. The teams core is Dunn(d/f), Ertz(m/d), Lavelle(m/f), and Sam Mewis(m/d). Bring 2 younger and 3 older players Macario(m), Sophia Smith(f), Morgan(f), Press(f) and Sauerbrunn(d). Seven players left and you have to fill based on positions. You will need defenders. You have to worry about injuries and really do not have the luxury of rostering an older forward who has not player another position.
For people that understand soccer, it is known Rapinoe is not one of the best all-around players. She's great on service and set pieces. She's not great 1 v 1 or playing defense. She earned a place in the team over the years. But taking more than a year off in an Olympics year should be a no-go for someone limited at 36. How much you bet she makes it?
