Please please don't give her a nickname as the primary name. Everyone I know, including my mother (Molly) hated it. Everyone always asks them "what is your real name?" My mother was named after an aunt Molly whose real name was Maria (pronounced Mariah), but my grandparents liked the nickname only. If you go with Margaux, spell it Margot instead, then it isn't exactly like your niece. That is the more classic French spelling anyway.
That's weird because I know several people named Molly ranging in age from 2 to 45ish and not one of them is actually named Margaret (which Molly used to be a nickname for). They're all just plain old Molly. I think your mom's issue is a generational thing - most of her peers named Molly probably truly were Margarets, but nowadays, that's not a thing.
Every current Molly I know is actually a Mary, but I wouldn’t do that to my kid. Name her what you’re going to call her. I go by my nickname, always have and always have wished it was my only name.
