The best soccer teams I have seen locally and regionally are full of small and fast players. Fast players are dangerous as they move the ball faster. A tall player can be fast yess but it may be easier to be read. The small and fast gets out of sight. Maradona and Messi biggest attributes are their size.
So the best regional teams...what’s that middle school or high school? College is a very different level vs school girl soccer. Move the ball better- are you talking about speed of play? The best speed of play I saw was in a middle school girl who was pretty tall vs everyone else. The thing is she actually played too fast for her teammates. Maradona and Messi they are the rule or the exception? Everyone know small short people play soccer. The big tall player likes Ronaldo 6’-2”, Haaland 6’-4”, Lewandowski 6’-0”, Calvert-Lewin 6’-2”, Jean-Philippe Mataram 6’-4”, Son 6’-0”, Lampard 6’-0”, Jordan Henderson 6’-0”, Dele Alli 6’-2”, Müller 6’-1”, etc can’t play...just too slow. Can’t move the ball fast. Big tall players may be put on defense...you know to stop the headers...but are just too slow to play a quick small player. Enough about the men’s. Lets look at Women’s college soccer. Let’s look at last year’s championship game rosters excluding goalies. 5’-5” we will call average and not count as tall or short. Stanford(‘19) 16 5’-6” and over, two under 5’-4” NC(‘19) 15 5’6” or taller(only one who was 5’-6”) 5’-4” and under 8(five who were 5’-4”). Let’s look at some random regional college teams. I think anyone who be happy to have their kid play soccer at any of these schools(yes?). UVa 17 5’-6” and over, five 5’-4” PSU(19) 16 5’-6” and over, four under 5’-4” (3 5’-4”) Georgetown(19) 20 5’-6” and over, three 5’-4” Seems like a pattern?
+1000. Nobody is saying the short field player cannot make it. But the odds are just against it. That does not mean give up all hope. I hope you have a future Messi in your house.
