I went to the old GC. I hated it. I was from Bethesda/Chevy Chase, and I definitely didn't fit in. Most of the kids were from Rockville, Silver Spring, Wheaton or Gaithersburg. The academics were not that great, though not terrible, and it's a very big school. It's not that different from a public school. There were a decent number of kids with learning disabilities there, and they seemed to do well.
That is what puts me off. Many public schools can be said to be not much different from a public school. So what am I spending my money on besides the prestige factor and the longer commute? And the fact that we will have to make financial sacrifices and the my kid will feel poor
Why are you put off? I have 2 kids who attended GC and my oldest graduated from Sherwood (a MCPS HS). Public or private is a personal choice. Fortunately, we were in a position to consider what was best for each indivudal child. My children all got good educations and all are in college now. What we were willing to pay for was the structure/discipline that GC offered and that we felt 2 out of 3 of our kids needed. To us personally, that was worth the money. For the person who said that it was not that different from a public school....did you also attend a public HS? In my experience with my own kids, GC and Sherwood were very different in many different ways and alike in others.
