I hate tasting menus and small plates restaurants - not as controversial as it used to be when those kinds of restaurants were super popular
Yes! Agree 100%
NP. I posted something similar here in a discussion a long time ago, and someone replied that I must be fat and should stick with Cracker Barrel. Oh, DCUM. Small plates are great if I want 2.4 bites of 7 different dishes. Although I don't mind it for late-night dining (which is a euphemism for drinking).
Small plates are especially insidious if you are with a group. No, I don’t want a third of a dumpling!
Psst...learn how to order.
My point is you don't order one small plate of four croquetas when you have 10 guests, or whatever mental gymnastics it takes to lead you to 1/3 of a dumpling. You clearly order enough for everyone who wants one of something to get at least one of that thing. Your server can help guide you: how many orders of X for a group of 8 to get a proper taste. If you are getting a third of a dumpling, you're not ordering correctly. You're ordering like a stingy person, and stingy people aren't fun to share a small plates meal with. Small plates are a restaurant's excuse for not having to course their food properly. Anytime I've gone to small plates restaurants the server starts with "food comes out of the kitchen as it's ready," and has always meant the meal is all over the place. I'll grant that there are a couple of exceptions, but overall I'm so over these places.
