The Seagul if it’s an S6 or similar is an excellent basic guitar and should be totally serviceable. That said, if he’s been at it for a while and is motivated, and you can afford it, a more expensive guitar can be justified, if not critical. They’re both guitars he can keep for years, taking the Seagull places the Martin May be more at risk.[/quote]
