This. And I saw this coming in the shut FCPS thread down. People want schools shut down and then there is the discussion of what do we doing when the kids are at home. At least at school the kids are not going to a bunch of places being kids. If schools are closed down then you almost have to close down the indoor playgrounds and gyms and museums because there are going to be a good number of parents who take their kids out. [/quote]

the FCPS teachers are being trained on distance learning on Monday.  If the schools close, wouldn't some of that home time be dedicated to distance instruction?  I would think that would eat up some of the time.[/quote]

How many families do you think will actually have their elementary kids do school work at home? We had a Scout meeting last night. I mentioned that I had ordered work books and things for my son to use when the schools close. The parents looked at me like I was crazy. Three said that there is no way their kids would do school work because the kids will treat it like vacation. One parent said that her kids are going to complain about doing any type of school work. The others said that they were going to be working so how could they do school work with their kids and work and that the Nanny was not fluent enough in English to help the kids with school work. Essentially, I was the only one of the 8 gathered parents who thought that school work was going to be a part of my kids day. And then I realized that they all thought I was a Tiger Parent because why would I make my kid do math when school is closed?

I think that older kids are more likely to do some of the school works that teachers assign. I am thinking Sixth grade and above are more likely to make an attempt. I seriously doubt too many K-fifth graders will be doing a ton of at home work.

And those are the kids whose parents can be home, have reliable computers, have reliable internet, and speak/read good enough English to be able to help their kids. Do you really think that the high FARMS schools are going to have a high participation rate?

This is going to be an educational disaster for the kids who need the most help. Kids with learning disabilities, in ESOL, or require any type of support in able to maintain their learning are going to struggle. The kids whose parents are able to help but are less excited about school will probably do some of the work but not all. Kids whose parents have been more involved and are in a good place will be on top of the school work.

When schools reopen the kids whose parents stayed on top of things are going to be bored stuff as the kids whose parents made something of an effort to no effort have to be caught up.
