I think this is all dependent on the dog. My dogs beyond puppy shots have never needed to go to the vet except for a check-up until they were seniors, but you still need to be prepared for this. At the end of my dog’s life was the most costly once he had kidney disease with the fluids, medications, and prescription foods. We have a small puppy now where he’s only been in for his 8 week shots. We signed up for a plan where we pay $60 a month and he gets his heartworm meds, all of his shots and he’ll be neutered at no extra cost and unlimited office visits. My dogs heartworm medicine even without the plan though only comes to about $8-$9 a month, it’s Interceptor plus. So it’ll be over $700 a year but I like knowing he can get checked out anytime with no extra fee and we’d just have to pay for meds if needed. I’ve never hired a dog trainer, just bought a few training books and did it myself. I’ve never had any problems. At this time I don’t need a dog walker because someone is always home or can be shortly. Even so I never had a dog walker and I’ve also never crated my dogs beyond when they were tiny and I thought they’d get hurt if I left them alone. If I was going to be gone more than a couple hours after this time I would give them a larger area on a tile floor and gate them off in case they had an accident but this was rare. My dogs get long walks for exercise in the morning and at night.
