Superdelegates. That's where. Because a superdelegate has essentially hundreds or even thousands of "votes"... and Superdelegates essentially negate individual voters. Until we get rid of them and use a more egalitarian system, it's a rigged and unfair process.
The unpledged delegates, aka super delegates are Democratic Members of the U.S. House and Senate, Governors, and DNC Members elected by their state parties. All are currently in office, having been elected in their states to represent the Democratic Party in some capacity. In the old days these people ran the whole thing. Electing delegates who are pledged to candidates according to primary and caucus results is a very recent practice. If the Democratic holders of major federal, state, and party offices were not slotted as unpledged delegates to the national convention, most of them would seek to be pledged delegates through the primary and caucus processes. That would change the dynamic of the primaries in many states, as it would force them to become much more involved in the Presidential race at earlier stages, endorsing candidates and organizing their own supporters to support the candidates they have endorsed. That would not necessarily be better.
