I talked to my 8th grader last night - M: hey, I heard there was a knife found on a kid at Deal. 8th: Probably. Wouldn't be surprised. M: Oh well, do you think kids have weapons a lot? 8th: I love deal, you wouldn't believe what goes on there. (she think's being at Deal makes her tough) M: well I also heard there were a lot of drugs at Deal. 8th: haha, yeah, there have been a bunch of drug busts. M: Someone told me there was pot at lunch. 8th: yeah, one of the busts was during lunch. M: And I hear edibles? 8th: yeah, one of my friends ate a cupcake from someone and he felt so sick. M: ! 8th: don't worry. M: so are these kids you know? 8th: I mean some of them. M: are these kids I know? 8th: no, not really. M: can you please talk to me about drugs when they are around you? 8th: seriously. Don't worry. argh.
If you have a problem then pull her. Having had more than 3 kids at Deal (including 2 now) I can tell you that they are having a completely different experience. Sure kids have said they hear about drugs but no, ZERO drug busts at lunch unless it was a 6th grader. There are far fewer fights than in previous years. There has definitely been some alcohol issues being snuck in. But to think that a kid at a cupcake and felt sick = edibles is crazy. They are middle schoolers. If their lips are moving they are lying.
My kid was there during Albright. When DC was in 6th grade, Albright had one 8th grade outside (spring) one day discussing drugs that had been discovered. Found out later that at least 1/4 of the entire gradewas suspended. While there was some use after that, I think it had quite an effect on the classes who had been there. Kids were regularly suspended. Wilson was on a whole other level in terms of drug use which kinda shocked my kid when he first got there. But where are you going to go? Private schools in NW have drug use too.
