The rifle designed by Stoner and designated by Armalite as the AR-15 was a fully automatic, select fire, machine gun. The same gun when designated by the military remained a fully automatic, select fire, machine gun. The guns marketed to "civilians" as "AR-15's" are not, and never have been, fully automatic, select fire, or machine guns. Indeed, they are specifically designed to prevent conversion to automatic fire. Cosmetics and marketing nomenclature do not make a sporting rifle a military weapon. [/quote]
