I just read through the booklet that was linked on this thread. There are hundreds of young women pictured, and not one—not ONE!—woman of color. WTH?! I’m white, if that matters. Is UVA really that non-diverse? Or do POC avoid UVA sororities? Or was it a bad choice of overall photos by the people who devised the booklet?
Sororities were traditionally segregated. White sororities for whites. Jewish sororities for Jews. AA sororities for African Americans. They have integrated in the last 50 years, but any integration is voluntary. It is more segregated at southern campuses than campuses elsewhere.
Kind of off topic, but I was at a predominantly white sorority that attempted to become more diverse, and we found that most of the AA women who were interested in sororities were legacies of traditionally AA sororities. We gave them bids, but they chose to pledge the traditionally AA sorority, which is understandable. In addition to all of the obvious racial/social aspects, AA sororities tend to be much more important lifetime social affiliation than the traditionally white sororities.
