Do any of the board members live on Seminary road? I imagine it's much quieter know with the reduced traffic volume.
DP. That portion of Seminary Road has very few houses directly facing the road, and most are larger houses in large lots that sit well off the road. The land of the Episcopal Seminary faces a large portion of the area, Beth El Synagogue faces the riD and is in a large lot, Alexandria Inova Hospital has a large swath of land, along with the fire station, Hammon Middle School, a shopping center, and a medical office building. I live off Seminary Road and the problem arise from the new Army headquarters in Mark Center. Increased traffic from that building caused concern from older neighbors The City first said they would install traffic calming, similar to the extended curbs and raised median in Janney Ln (which is an extension of Seminary Rd). The next thing we knew, Alexandria said they would put in bike lanes as traffic calming devices. This seemed counter-intuitive but I trusted the city. At any rate, I went to the meeting and we were told there had been a petition signed by by cyclists to do the bike lanes. There was a good deal if opposition at the meeting from people who live off Howard, Pegram, Jordan, Saint Stephens, and Ft Williams who thought it would force more cut through traffic into neighboring streets. I live off Saint Stephens and have noticed more traffic in the mornings trying to cut through. The bigger problem is at night. I have a caregiver for my mother and take her home after I get home from work around 6 pm. Last week, it took 20 minutes to go maybe two miles from Saint Stephen and Seminary to Seminary and Southern Towers, just off Rt 395. Getting home took about 30 minutes. Generally this takes 10-15 minutes round trip. We live in Alexandria because our kids attend Saint Stephen Saint Agnes, but it is a poorly run city and we will move after they finish school. The only city employees who seem to know what they are doing are the trash collectors. They have been very kind to my mother who likes to chat with them on bin day.
